Vavruska was born in Antigo, WI in 1917 and studied at the University of Wisconsin from 1935-38 and at the the Art Institute of Chicago from 1938-1941. He was awarded the Ryerson Traveling Fellowship at the Art Institute of Chicago, which brought him to Mexico from 1941-42 and 1945-46. While recuperating in the hospital in England during his service in WWII, he produced a number of paintings that became the basis of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1945. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and The Renaissance Society of the University of Chicago. His work can be found in the collection of the Museum of Wisconsin Art. He died in Chicago at the untimely age of 56, in 1974.
