About the Gallery

Founded in the year 2000, Richard Norton Gallery specializes in notable American and European paintings drawings and sculpture of the Twentieth Century. The gallery offers a broad range of artwork spanning throughout the main artistic movements of the era, including Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Realism, Abstraction, Cubism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism. A special focus of the gallery is the Modern painters of Chicago, many of whom were noteworthy instructors or students at the Art Institute of Chicago. Gallery exhibitions include works by Albert H. Krehbiel, Pauline Palmer, Karl Buehr, Medard Klein, Robert Erickson, Walter Burt Adams, Hanaiah Harari, Gerrit Sinclair, Richard Koppe, Francis Chapin, Walter Krawiec, R. Leroy Turner, Edgar Miller and Georges Maurice Cloud, among others. Additionally, the gallery has dedicated exhibitions to important private collections, such as the Bridges Collection of Chicago Painting, 1885-1945. Many artists represented were avant-garde leaders of their time, achieving considerable acclaim during their lifetimes. The gallery is committed to re-introducing the artwork of historically important and rediscovered masters to a contemporary audience. Frequently, gallery selections have not been seen by the public eye in several decades. Through curated exhibitions and publications, the gallery aims to re-introduce, highlight and contextualize an artist’s work and his legacy to both established and beginning collectors alike.

Artwork on view at the gallery is thematically and historically wide-reaching. Selections include notable examples of Mid-Century and Modern Abstractions, urban and industrial scenes, country landscapes and paintings of foreign travel, mural studies, still-life compositions, figure studies, portraiture and Modern architectural and design studies. The gallery's unique location in Chicago’s historic Merchandise Mart and its cultivated design clientele offers a private, refined and enjoyable venue for the collector to acquire, sell and view noteworthy fine art of the Twentieth Century.
