Alexis J. Fournier

American, 1865 - 1948


Alexis Fournier was born in St. Cloud, Minnesota in 1865. He studied at the Minneapolis School of Art. Fournier continued his studies in France a the Academie Julian (which associated him with the Barbizon-style School of painting).

Fournier became an important part of the Arts and Crafts community of the Roycrofters in East Aurora, New York; however, he is also well-known for his paintings of the Mississippi River near Minneapolis and also for being part of the Brown County, Indiana school of painters.

His work can be found at the Minnesota Museum of American Art, St. Paul, MN. The Detroit Institute of Arts Museum, Detroit, MI and the Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery, Nashville, TN, among others.
