Ivan Le Lorraine Albright

American, 1897 - 1983


Born an identical twin in 1897 in Harvey, Illinois, Ivan Albright became the most famous of a family of notable artists. Father Adam Albright was a successful and much-revered painter of idyllic scenes of children depicted in rural landscapes, and twin Malvin (Zissily) was well-known Chicago Modern artist. In 1943, MGM hired Albright and his twin to paint a series of portraits depicting the physical and mental deterioration of the title character in the “Picture of Dorian Gray”. The intense and graphic final portrait made Ivan Albright world famous. Albright’s paintings are best known for their depiction of decay and deterioration. His works can be found in most major museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, The Carnegie Institute, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fire Arts, the Guggenheim Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, among others. Albright died in 1983.
