Eugenie Wehrle (Aldrich, McEvoy, Odell)

French/American, 1879 - 1975


Eugenie Wehrle (Aldrich, McEvoy, Odell) was born in France in 1879. She came to the United States in 1906 as the wife of artist George Ames Aldrich. As well as being an artist, back in France she was a sharpshooter and in the nineteen-teens she had a vaudeville career under the name Madame D’Aures. She and Aldrich also had a collie breeding business called Amescroft Kennels at about the same time. In around 1921, Eugenie left Aldrich for famed writer J.P. McEvoy. She divorced McEvoy in 1932. Eugenie then settled in Woodstock, NY and married musician Philip O’Dell in 1949. She exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C., the society of Independent Artists, and the Woodstock Artist’s Association, among others. In 1975, she died at the age of 95 in Woodstock, NY.
