Winifred Milius Lubell

WInifred Milius Lubell was radical artist writer and illustrator that was born in New York City in 1914. She studied at the Art Student’s League in New York from 1933-1935. Although growing-up privileged on the West Side of New York, she did sketches of and participated in strikes and marches for the Loyalist cause of the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Lubell was a member of the Communist Party for over two decades. Ironically, she had too much money to get a job with the WPA. In 1935, she married a man, Daniel House, who was attending law school in Chicago. The Chicago Daily News and a leftist magazine, the New Masses, published her drawings of s strike at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. After divorcing House in 1939, she married Englishman Cecil Lubell, a Harvard graduate, who was a consultant to the textile industry and an author & editor. The couple settled in Croton-On-Hudson, NY where she illustrated and he wrote 12 nature books for children. Lubell illustrated books for others, as well. In 1994, she wrote & illustrated a book titled “The Metaporphosis of Baubo: Myths of Women’s Sexual Energy” for Vanderbilt Press. The couple relocated to Welfleet, MA in 1975. A “Renaissance woman’, Lubell taught herself ancient Greek and for years, she and other retirees meet weekly to discuss Greek plays and poetry in the original language! In 2012, Lubell died in Welfleet, MA at the age of 97.
