Clayton Whitehill

American, 1898 - 1963

Clayton Whitehill was an Abstract Expressionist painter who was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1898. Whitehill served in WWI and graduated from Columbia University in 1921. He was a Professor of Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Museum School and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy, Philadelphia, PA, among others. In 1947, Whitehill wrote a notable book on typography titled “The Moods of Type”, which is still in print today. In the late 1950s, Whitehill and his wife moved to Perugia, Italy, where his artwork became greatly inspired by the Italian culture and landscape. While in Italy, he exhibited with Galleria Schneider in Rome. Whitehill died in Perugia in 1963.
